PlainKnit— knitting patterns, in plain English.
Legal

Terms of Service.

Last updated: June 2026

These terms apply when you use PlainKnit at plainknit.co.uk. Please read them. They're written in plain English — because that's rather the point.

By using PlainKnit you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the service.

Not happy?

If your translation comes out wrong or you're unhappy for any reason, email us at hello@plainknit.co.uk and we'll fix it or refund it — whichever you'd prefer. No forms, no faff.

1.Who we are

PlainKnit is operated as a sole trader in the United Kingdom. Contact: hello@plainknit.co.uk.

2.The service

PlainKnit translates knitting patterns written in standard abbreviations into plain English instructions. You upload a pattern (PDF, JPG, or PNG), pay £2, and receive a translated version.

The service is provided as-is. While we work hard to produce accurate translations, knitting patterns can be ambiguous, poorly typeset, or handwritten, and our translations may not be perfect in every case. We will always offer to fix or refund any translation you are unhappy with — see Section 6.

3.Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old to use PlainKnit. By using the service, you confirm that you are.

4.Payment

The price for each pattern translation is £2 (two pounds sterling), inclusive of any applicable VAT.

Payments are processed by Stripe. By making a payment you also agree to Stripe's terms of service. We do not store your card details.

Payment is taken at the point of submission. Once you have paid, we will begin processing your translation immediately.

5.Your pattern and copyright

You retain all rights to any pattern you upload. By uploading it, you grant us a limited, temporary licence to process it for the sole purpose of generating your translation. We do not retain copies of your pattern after translation is complete.

You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to upload and process any pattern you submit. PlainKnit is intended for personal use — translating patterns you have legitimately purchased or obtained. We are not responsible if you upload content you do not have the right to use.

PlainKnit does not reproduce or distribute knitting patterns. We transform the instructions into plain English for your personal use only. The translated output is yours to keep and use personally. It should not be republished, resold, or distributed.

6.Refunds and remedies

We want every translation to be genuinely useful. If yours isn't, here's what we'll do:

  • If the translation is materially wrong or unreadable — we will re-translate it or refund you in full, whichever you'd prefer.
  • If you are unhappy for any other reason — email us at hello@plainknit.co.uk and we'll do our best to sort it. We consider requests case by case.
  • If you simply change your mind after payment but before we have processed your translation — email us promptly and we will refund you.

Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, you have a right to cancel a digital service within 14 days of purchase. However, by submitting your pattern for translation you are requesting that we begin the service immediately. If the translation has been delivered, your statutory right to cancel may no longer apply — but we will still consider refund requests in line with the above.

To request a refund, email hello@plainknit.co.uk with your order reference (from your Stripe receipt). We will respond within 2 business days.

7.What we are not responsible for

PlainKnit provides a translation of knitting instructions. We are not responsible for:

  • Errors in the original pattern that we reproduce or flag but cannot resolve.
  • Your finished knitting project not matching the intended result — knitting outcomes depend on yarn, tension, needles, and skill.
  • Loss of your uploaded file — please keep your own copy of any pattern you upload.
  • Any loss of data or service interruption caused by our hosting provider or third-party services.

Our liability to you is limited to the amount you paid for the translation in question (£2). Nothing in these terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation.

8.Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use PlainKnit for any unlawful purpose.
  • Upload content you do not have the right to process.
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, scrape, or systematically copy the service or its outputs.
  • Use the service in a way that could damage, disable, or impair it.

9.Intellectual property

The PlainKnit name, wordmark, website design, and the plain English translation format are our intellectual property. You may not copy or reproduce them without permission.

The translated output we produce for you is generated from your pattern. You may use it for personal knitting purposes. You may not resell or republish it.

10.Changes to the service or these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. If we make significant changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.

We may change the price of the service at any time. Any price change will be visible on the site before you submit a pattern.

11.Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
